Hunting and Trapping to Resume Outside Yellowstone

On December 10th, Yellowstone wolves got a temporary reprieve. Montana wildlife commissioners closed down the gray wolf hunting season in some areas outside Yellowstone National Park after several collared wolves were shot when beyond the safety of the park’s reach. This move came just days after Yellowstone Wolf “06″ fell victim outside the park in neighboring Wyoming. The closures prohibited hunting and trapping and included areas north of the park around the town of Gardiner.

This decision was celebrated by wildlife advocates but criticized by Citizens for Balanced Use, Big Game Forever, Montana Outfitters and Guides Association, and Montana Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife and soon thereafter these anti-wolf extremist groups filed a restraining order.  On January 2nd, Judge Nels Swandal issued an injunction overruling the commission’s decision,  thus allowing hunting & trapping to resume.

On Jan, 14th at 3PM, a hearing will be held in Livingtson, MT to determine whether the injunction will remain in effect.  Some friends from the National Wolfwatcher Coalition (NWC) will be there show their support for Montana FWP’s decision to close these zones to wolf hunting and trapping and they’re encouraging all interested ‘wolfwatchers’ in the area to attend too.

For those who will not be in the area, we encourage you to contribute to the discussion and NWC makes it easy. Please send in a quick and short comment to the MT Commissioners and representatives in support of its decision to close two subunits to wolf hunting near Yellowstone’s northern border.

Talking points and email addresses are available via the NWC’s website: http://wolfwatcher.org/news/all-news/yellowstone-support-mtfwps-decision-to-close-subunits/

  1. Brenda says:

Thank you for continuing with your efforts to close down wolf hunting in key areas. Pulling animals or any natural resource from the wild is a practice that we carry over from our ancient history. Human beings were not meant to be killers. There are far more humans now than can support this kind of activity, it must end. The animals must carry on after our individual lives have ended.

Hello, i am sending this comment in protection of the wolves. We need to protect these endangered and majestic creatures. Please take these comments from those in favor of helping these beautiful animals seriously and into consideration. There must be some kind of understanding from both sides of this argument. The answer is NOT to shoot and kill them. Please!!!

  7. Judy Schumacher says:

Please stop the hunting and trapping of our precious wolves. They harm no one and are a valued part of our eco system.

how would these people like it if they were the ones being hunted

  9. Kelly Williamson says:

When will man learn. Look at the past mistakes made on hunting these wolves and not continue making them in the future. Wolves are a very important part in our eco system.

  10. Kathryn Gruenthal says:

I believe that since the Montana legislature only meets every 2 years that there would be more pressing issues. Stop bowing to political pressure and not working with science.

  14. jules says:

for goodness sake , leave these poor animals alone , if you feel the need to kill something , try killing yourselves and not our wildlife , these amazing animals have as much right to live free as us the humans , people say they are beasts , they are not the beasts , but humans are , its humans going around killing them . would you like it if someone killed someone you knew , would you go out and kill the person who killed your friend , the answer is no , SO LEAVE THE WOLVES TO ROME FREE LIKE THEY SHOULD BE thank you

  15. Emi E. says:

I read somewhere that in reality, casualties caused by wolf to cattle or domestic animals in areas outside Yellowstone National Park are very minimal as compared to loss by sickness & weather elements. Perhaps it is time for wolf haters to stop taking out there frustration & anger on wolves and see what they can do to aleviate this problem by embracing science, technology and real facts & data. Solving the problem with guns is not the answer.
