The Bear Reality

The WCC lecture series continued this July with “The Bear Reality”.  Over 40 guests joined Master Wildlife Conservationist, Felicia A.E. Ortner, for this very informative talk.  Bears around the world are facing a growing number of threats.  Loss of habitat, illegal hunting and poaching, and a misplaced fear of these creatures often lead to unnecessary killing.  Only through outreach and education will these denizens of the woods become better understood.  Ortner dispelled some of the myths associated with bears, she provided natural history information, and talked about some of the results of the black bear research conducted by wildlife biologists in the Northeast.  Guests swapped personal bear encounter experiences while sitting by the WCC's own misunderstood beasts, ambassador wolves - Kaila, Apache, Lukas and Atka.
