The Last Polar Bear
Jean Craighead George Previews “The Last Polar Bear” at WCC
On April 18th, the WCC celebrated the Earth Day a little early with a very special event honoring Westchester’s own Jean Craighead George, the Newbery Medal-winning children's author and environmentalist who is an inspiration for children and adults alike. It was a special afternoon as close to 50 WCC guests, volunteers and staff were treated to a special preview reading of “The Last Polar Bear,” Jean’s soon to be released book celebrating the natural world. Her words, her voice and the howls of the WCC’s ambassador wolves -- what a wonderful backdrop for storytelling! The picture book addresses the threats of a warming world through the eyes of a young Eskimo boy, Tigluk. Jean’s words and Wendell Minor’s beautiful illustrations capture the raw beauty of the Arctic and the challenges that polar bears now face as a result of climate change. “The Last Polar Bear” will be released in April of 2009.
