Northern Rocky Mountain Wolves Losing Federal Protections Tomorrow
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that wolves of Idaho and Montana, eastern Washington, eastern Oregon and northern Utah will be removed from the endangered species list tomorrow. Wolves on Wyoming will retain federal protection until the state proposes a plan approved by the Fish and Wildlife Service. Montana and Idaho have already started plans for wolf hunts this fall. At least one conservation group, Western Watersheds Project based in Idaho, is expected to file litigation in US District Court challenging the delisting rider that was attached to the recently passed budget bill.
