House Passes Funding Bill Attacking Wolves, Wildlife

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2025 House Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Act (H.R. 8998) today, approving massive spending cuts to federal agencies and signaling a lack of respect for the wildlife and wild places that Americans love so dearly.

The bill includes harmful anti-wildlife riders, including one that would remove all federal protections for gray wolves across the lower 48 states (excluding Mexican gray wolves). Losing federal ESA protections would have deadly implications for gray wolves: in just the last few years, thousands of wolves have been shot or trapped in states where protections were temporarily or permanently lifted. In 2021, Wisconsin held a wolf hunt for the first time since 2014 and 218 wolves were killed in less than three days; a blatant disregard of nature’s balance.

The bill passed primarily along party lines by a vote of 210 to 205, with 17 Representatives not voting. The Wolf Conservation Center, along with 82 other environmental organizations, called on the House to oppose H.R. 8998. Stay tuned for next steps.
