Montana Introduces Slew of Anti-Wolf Bills, Public Comment Needed

Trophy Wide

The start of Montana’s 2025 legislative session has seen the introduction of several anti-wildlife and anti-wolf bills, and a pair of especially dangerous bills are being discussed by the House Fish, Wildlife, and Parks committee on January 21st at 3 pm MT.

The two bills, HB176 and HB222, would drastically cut the wolf population and would have far-reaching impacts on both Montana ecosystems and the economy. We urge you to OPPOSE these bills, whether through public testimony or written comments.

HB176 – This bill would require an unlimited wolf hunting quota when the population is at or above 450 wolves. The current wolf population estimate of ~1,100 is based on the flawed iPOM method which has been shown to overestimate wolf abundance.

HB222 – This bill would mandate a year-round wolf hunting season until the state population is at or below 600 wolves. Year-round hunting would have immediate and long-lasting effects on the overall population and on individual family groups, who have been shown to fragment when family members are killed.

Take action for Montana’s wolves! Public written comments/testimony are accepted through January 23, 2025. Click the link below to submit your comment (note: you’ll need to make a free account to comment).
