Without public support, efforts to protect wildlife are more likely to fail. This is why engaging with people of various backgrounds is an essential part of any wildlife management or conservation program.

WCC-IECL is forging a new path toward inclusivity of historically marginalized or underutilized perspectives and knowledges through avenues like historical social-ecology and survey-based research targeting people living within the red wolf’s historical range.

Investigating the Social-Ecological Contexts of Red Wolves

The WCC-IECL is interested in contextualizing red wolves within cultural perspectives and traditions in order to elucidate frictions between affected communities in this species’ reintroduction and conservation. We aim to help identify flashpoints in cultural and social histories that create deep-rooted conflict leading to present-day tensions between constituents of wildlife agencies. These points of conflict create lasting challenges for program management, so seeking long-term solutions ensures greater security in red wolf recovery.

Social Receptiveness to Red Wolf Conservation

We understand that the ecological conditions on the ground are not the only contributors to a growing red wolf population in the Eastern North Carolina recovery area. In addition to the physical habitat, red wolves need a positive social habitat to thrive throughout their historical range. WCC-IECL is working to measure attitudinal shifts and implement targeted behavioral interventions tailored to distinct communities in consideration of values and concerns relating to red wolf recovery.
