Thirty-eight years ago, a new chapter in wildlife conservation began with a wild homecoming unlike anything seen before. The first captive-bred red wolves were released to the wild!
JOIN THE RED WOLF WEEK MOVEMENT!
In recognition of the anniversary, the Wolf Conservation Center invites you to celebrate the ninth annual Red Wolf Week!
Starting September 14th, we're enlisting Wildlife Organizations, Zoos, Advocacy Groups, Businesses, and individuals like you to come together with one common purpose - to raise awareness for the world's rarest wolf, the red wolf.
Help us raise awareness for endangered red wolves; their importance and plight, and the efforts to recover a species on the brink of extinction. All week long the WCC will share interesting red wolf facts, activities for kids, webinars, ways to take action and more!
Free Webinar
Red wolves once widely roamed across most of the eastern United States, living in wetlands, temperate forests, and coastal prairies. Today, just 18 are known to remain in the wild.
How was this uniquely North American wolf pushed to the brink of extinction, and how will they be saved?
Join the Wolf Conservation Center on September 16, 2025, at 6 pm EST to learn about the history, plight, and future of red wolves. Dr. Joey Hinton, the Center’s Senior Research Scientist, and Regan Downey, the Center’s Director of Education and Advocacy, will detail the intense persecution that led to the near extinction of red wolves, legislative and collaborative efforts that successfully reintroduced them back into the wild, the challenges they face currently, and plans to recover them within their historical range.
Engage in this conversation exploring the world's most endangered wolf and how collaborative efforts can offer a path to their survival.
Southeastern Howls: In-Person Education Programs
The Wolf Conservation Center participates in the SAFE Program (Saving Animals From Extinction) and Recovery Plan for the critically endangered red wolf. But what does this really mean?
Join us to learn what it takes to help save a species from the brink of extinction. Guests will get an inside look at the challenges currently facing the red wolf population both in the wild and captivity, and what these challenges mean for the future of this species. Guests will visit Ambassador Wolves Nikai, Silas, and Kinari as well as potentially behold the WCC’s critically endangered red wolves and Mexican gray wolves. Pre-registration is required.
